While Imperious Oligarch's Afterlife ability provides additional value upon its death, there are potentially better cards such as Seraph of the Scales or Tithe Taker that offer more impactful abilities or stats for a similar mana cost. However, Imperious Oligarch could still see play in a budget or token-focused deck where its abilities synergize well with the overall strategy.

Because blockers are chosen all at once, you can’t block with a creature with afterlife, wait for it to die, then block with the resulting Spirit tokens.
